You will have a much harder time standing out and usually post secondary education is needed to be considered for employment. Coming in with over 38,000 enrolled part-time and full-time students, the Los Angeles Trade-Technical College is a two year college that is available to the public. You can obtain certificates and associate’s degrees in fashion merchandising or fashion design. Potential students that want to participate in either program would need to commit two years before they complete it usually. Those that wish to get a degree from the Los Angeles Trade-Technical College will need to take basic education courses such as English and math in addition to the fashion courses.



The full-time classes are during the daytime hours, but they also have weekend and nighttime programs that are great for people that don’t have a lot of time during the day to commit to a full education. Those weekend and nighttime classes don’t offer degrees though, but they can still give you some great insight into the fashion world and are a great idea for refresher courses. Those that are enrolled full-time will participate in fashion shows and displaying of fashion designs. There are a lot of ways that students can get financial aid as well. They also have an on campus baby sitting program and job assistance.

The American InterContinental University in Los Angeles is a for-profit, private institution. The school offers an associate’s degree program in fashion marketing and fashion design. They also offer a bachelor’s degree in fashion marketing, fashion design, and a combination of the two. The students that participate in the bachelor degree program can choose to specialize in either costume design or fashion design. The college does participate in different financial aid programs and you can get loans and grants too.

The Otis College of Art & Design is a private and non-profit institution. They have 1,200 undergraduate and graduate students that make up their enrollment. The selection process for this college is a bit more rigorous, as usually only half of the applicants get acceptance letters. You can go through 4 years of full-time study and obtain a bachelor’s degree in fashion design. A lot of drawing and illustration as it pertains to fashion will be part of the coursework. Computer aided drafting is also a part of it. Three out of every four students are also able to take advantage of financial aid.
