Depending on if you are a male or a female, the job title differs. You see, a seamstress is a female professional in the fashion world that makes clothing and accessories. A tailor is a male that does the same thing. They are the ones that are responsible for the actual creation of the garments and accessories that are created by the designers and pattern makers. They are charged with creating a pattern if there is not one already created. Tailors and seamstresses are also the people that will choose which fabric to use where and they make alterations to the garments and accessories as they see fit. They work very closely with the designers and pattern makers to ensure that the vision that was thought of comes to life accurately.

Tailors and seamstresses can expect to take home $20,000 to $35,000 annually. They may make more or less than those numbers depending on the amount of experience they have that is relevant to the position and the type of place that they are working at. A lot of it also has to do with the amount of clients that you have and the reputation that has been built. Reputation is one of the biggest factors in the fashion world, and it is no exception with the salaries of tailors and seamstresses.

 

 

A lot of the time you are only required to have some experience in sowing along with a high school diploma or a GED to land a job as a seamstress or a tailor. Although there will be companies that may require a bit more, like a completion of a training program or a degree in a related field. There are also plenty of internships out there that will also help to give potential seamstresses and tailors the experience they are looking for.
